Jazzy beltress Cindy Latin creates catchy hook with “Running Out of Love.”

I had the pleasure of spending my first year at college getting to know Cindy Latin, as she was in my core. Anyone who knows “core” knows you get to know almost too much about everyone in it. Anyone who doesn’t- it’s basically a cult- but it’s a fun! musical! cult! You learn music, dive into your deepest and darkest secrets all while sitting in a circle…....anyway. Cindy always had a talent. Her vocal quality and range was striking and eye-catching. When she went over to study songwriting at Berklee no one was surprised, as this seemed to be a perfect fit for her.

Cindy has been releasing music ever since and has gained quite a good following in the few years she’s been doing so. Her songs are brassy and jazzy full of delicious riffs and swing.

Her latest release, “Running out of Love,” came out Friday October 9th. The lyrics are playful, almost confrontational in the way she speaks to the audience, letting them in on the joke. She flows in and out of octaves seamlessly with control and ease. I have been singing the catchy hook all week.

Cindy has a huge band behind her in this song, using almost 20 instrumentalists; made up of tight sax players, bouncing trumpets and gritty trombones. It takes a village to get this sound- but it's seamless with the appeal of big bands such as Maynard Ferguson and Thelonious Monk; capturing vocal quality that of Ella or Etta, adding in her musical theater technique.

Watching Cindy sing live at school was always one of my favorite things and I look forward to when I see her onstage next. Listen on Apple Music.

“Running Out of Love” was mastered by Steph Bayes and engineered by John Kilgore.

FFO: Snarky Puppy, Dirty Projectors, Amy Winehouse.

“Like Wires Humming”

“Hospital Bed” may be one of the best songs of this year, full of gripping vocals and driving rock.

Noah Silvestry the frontman of Luke Ellingson put out a ripping EP on October 23rd. A New Haven local, they play around with all of their musical roots, including Philadelphia’s scene. It has the grunge of New Haven with the new wave edge of Philly.

We used to get along like wires humming
— Hospital Bed

If you only have a few minutes for a new song today, you would be remiss to not give “Hospital Bed” a listen through. This song is a journey on its own starting as a pop/punk ballad ending in a blend of Modest Mouse and the [good parts of] 1975 on crack with epic vocals and a driving edge. The lyric writing in this song is poetic and exquisite. This definitely makes it to my list of “Damn I Wish I Wrote That.” My favorite section is at 1:11 where they explode into instrumental fantasy.

This album dropped on October 23rd, though they had been releasing singles beforehand. Please check Luke Ellingson out (and the epic musicians that helped out including: Max Kulick and Max Mines). ALL OF THE SALES GO TO THE CT BAIL BUND AND NEW HAVEN MUTUAL AID, so put your money where your mouth is folks. Released in collaboration with Funnybone Records (and the amazing Dylan Healy of Stadia), mixed by Noah Silvestry and mastered by Ryan Schwabe.
